1st National Marine Industries Forum

“Issues and Challenges – Moving Forward”

Tuesday, 23 March 2010
Istana Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

About the forum

Malaysia has what it takes to emerge as a serious player in the marine industries which include shipbuilding, ship repairing, support services, and leisure industries. However, the development of these industries is hindered by many issues and challenges. Generally, the industries in the country face stiff competition globally and regionally. The activities involved in marine industries are both capital and labour-intensive. Malaysian shipyards are not technically capable of building and servicing more sophisticated ocean-going vessels. They do not possess the technological prowess that leading shipbuilding nations like Korea and Japan have, nor do they have the economies of scale and abundant, cheap labour that China enjoys.

Despite 60 years of experience in marine industry, Malaysia is still very far from being internationally known. In the absence of concerted effort, the industry is fragmented. There is an urgent need for Malaysia to have a collective mind and develop strategic plans for the industry. With this in the background, this forum is organised to provide an avenue for the stakeholders in the industries to come together to voice out their problems and provide inputs on ways that will spur the industries to compete internationally.

Objectives

  • To provide a national platform for open exchange of views on issues and
    challenges in the marine industries.

  • To brainstorm on viable options in promoting the growth of marine industries in the country.

  • To use the inputs from the forum to determine the way forward for the benefits and betterment of the marine industries in Malaysia.

  • To provide findings and feedbacks to relevant government agencies in reviewing the Third Industrial Master Plan (IMP3), and to provide guidance for future development of IMP.
